Routine infant circumcision is an American invention. It was sold with medical claims that changed every generation, and it crossed the Pacific with the same power that ruled, occupied and "modernized" Asia. It was never ours.

1. 1500s–1600s

   The cross arrives with the sword

   Spain colonized the Philippines from 1565 with converting its people as a central aim. In Portuguese Goa, the Inquisition set up in 1560 persecuted Hindus, destroyed temples and pushed forced conversions. Western faith first reached much of Asia behind soldiers and ships.

2. 1800s

   Bible and scalpel arrive together

   After the Opium Wars, Western powers forced "unequal treaties" on China that put missionaries and their converts under the protection of foreign guns. Missionaries brought Western medicine with them: in 1885, American missionary Horace Allen opened Korea's first Western hospital. Faith, medicine and empire were sold as one package. The West's way was civilized, and ours needed correcting.

3. 1870s–1890s

   American doctors invent a cure-all

   Physicians such as Lewis Sayre promoted circumcision to treat paralysis and other ailments. John Harvey Kellogg recommended it to stop masturbation. The claimed benefits kept changing; the knife stayed.

4. 1882

   America brands Asians as dirty

   The Chinese Exclusion Act banned Chinese workers from the United States, backed by propaganda that painted Chinese people as filthy and diseased. In 1900, San Francisco quarantined its entire Chinatown during a plague scare. The message was clear: Asian bodies were a public-health threat that needed controlling.

5. 1898–1946

   America rules the Philippines, and medicalizes it

   Under U.S. colonial rule, American doctors treated Filipino bodies as problems to be cleaned up, a "civilizing" public-health project historians have documented in detail. That idea, that Western hygiene must correct Asian bodies, is the same logic behind routine circumcision.

6. 1900s–1960s

   Hospitals make it the default

   As births moved into hospitals, newborn circumcision became routine in the U.S., often with little real discussion. By the mid-20th century a large majority of American boys were cut.

7. 1945–1953

   America occupies Korea, and the knife comes with it

   Before 1945, fewer than 1 in 1,000 Korean men were circumcised. Then the U.S. Army Military Government took control of southern Korea, and American troops returned in force for the Korean War. Circumcised American soldiers became the picture of what "modern" looked like. Korean men were taught that their own bodies were backward.

8. "If Americans did it, it must be good."

   Within a decade, South Koreans came to believe that practicing circumcision was "advanced and modern," just like the American soldiers.

9. 1960s–2000

   A generation cut to an American standard

   Doctors schooled in American medicine sold circumcision as hygienic and necessary. Researchers name those mistaken, outdated medical beliefs as a leading cause of what followed. Korean boys were cut not as babies but in middle and high school, pushed by doctors and peer pressure. By around 2000, about 88% of Korean boys aged 14 to 16 were circumcised, in a country that had almost none 55 years earlier. Researchers called it "extraordinarily high." No other country shows so clearly how American power reshaped Asian bodies.

10. 1975 onward

    Refugees of American wars meet American hospitals

    Vietnamese, Hmong, Lao and Cambodian families resettled in the U.S. after wars America fought in their homelands. Their sons were born into a hospital system that treated circumcision as standard, in a language many parents were still learning.

11. Today

    We're taking it back

    Korean men are rejecting it. Among boys aged 14 to 16, the rate fell from 88% to 56% in a single decade, and researchers credit people finally getting real information. U.S. newborn rates have dropped since the 1980s. Asian American parents are refusing a practice their ancestors never had.

Heritage by region

Imposed, not inherited

For most of Asia, routine circumcision isn't heritage. It's an import, carried in by Western medicine and empire.

Whole before the ancestors

In imperial China, even palace eunuchs refused to face the afterlife incomplete. They kept what had been cut from them preserved in a jar, called their "treasure" (寶), and had it buried with them so they could meet their ancestors whole.

That's the oldest foreskin buyback there is. Our ancestors understood what was taken, and they wanted it back.

"Cut off my head, not my hair"

In 1895, a Japanese-backed government in Korea ordered men to cut their traditional topknots and adopt Western-style hair. Confucian scholar Choe Ik-hyeon answered: "You may cut off my head, but you cannot cut off my hair." It became the rallying cry of the Righteous Army resistance.

Koreans were ready to die rather than let a foreign standard reshape their bodies. Fifty years later, American influence did what the topknot decree couldn't.

How Japan fell for the West, then forced it on Korea

After Western gunboats forced Japan open in the 1850s, Meiji Japan decided the way to survive was to become Western. Its leaders pushed Western dress and hair onto their own people, encouraging men to cut their topknots from 1871. Then imperial Japan turned that same agenda on its neighbors: the 1895 topknot decree in Korea, and colonial rule from 1910 to 1945 that tried to erase Korean identity.

Japan's empire learned the West's lesson all too well: that Asian ways were backward and had to be cut away. Korea paid for it twice, first under Japan, then under America.

Our culture held the body sacred. Keeping it whole isn't just a choice. It's filial piety. It's pride.

Our target is the American-style routine infant circumcision exported through Western medicine and empire, and the white-supremacist idea that Asian bodies need correcting. We challenge a system, never a people.

Identity

What they cut was never just skin

For Asian Americans, circumcision arrived as one term of a much bigger bargain: become American, look American, stop being foreign. It was assimilation made permanent, carried out before we could speak, and it measured our bodies against a standard that was never ours.

Our grandparents in Taiwan, Canton and Saigon had never heard of it. We were born in American hospitals, and nobody asked.

The price of belonging

Every generation of Asian Americans was offered the same deal: blend in, and maybe you'll be accepted.

So families paid the price. They changed their names. Children stopped speaking their parents' languages. And in the delivery room, parents let the hospital do what American hospitals do. Routine circumcision was one more quiet term of that deal, written on the body of a newborn.

What pride looks like

1. Learn the words our ancestors lived by. 身體髮膚，受之父母: our bodies are received from our parents.
2. Keep your family's language, names and stories alive. Every one of them was something assimilation tried to take.
3. Ask your elders what was done, and what they were told. Their silence was part of the deal. Your questions break it.
4. Refuse to be grateful for being changed. Belonging should never cost a piece of who you are.
5. Give your sons the choice you never had. That is how a people heals.
